PUZZLE Framework Architecture

The vision of PUZZLE is to design and implement a novel, highly usable cybersecurity, privacy and data protection management framework offered as a collection of security services of a marketplace targeted at SMEs&MEs.

PUZZLE’s Framework Reference Architecture was based on the thorough technical security and privacy requirements analysis performed by the members of the consortium, the two supported use cases, the minimum viable product definition as well as on the legal, ethical and compliance requirements determined at the beginning of the PUZZLE project.

The reference architecture is split in five distinct swimlanes. Namely, these swimlanes include:

  • The Logically Centralized PUZZLE Orchestrator swimlane which incorporates all components that are considered “central” i.e., agnostic to the running services.
  • The Orchestration Worker swimlane which incorporates the “local control plane” components of PUZZLE i.e., the components that materialize the business logic that is “close” to the running service.
  • The Edge Analytics swimlane which incorporates all components that undertake “offline analytics” tasks i.e., tasks that are not considered near real time.
  • The Blockchain-based Threat Intelligence swimlane which incorporates all components that materialize a secure and trustworthy data sharing environment regarding threat intelligence information.
  • The Marketplace swimlane which encapsulates a central reference point where “templated” security services are packaged and advertised.

PUZZLE aims to deliver a holistic security framework targeting cloud native deployments in modern orchestration engines.

Therefore, it will deliver a programmable control plane and data plane that will ensure that several sophisticated security features can be provided seamlessly to the deployed application; i.e. without enriching the structure of the hosted application and without modifying the vanilla version of the orchestration substrate.
